Starting a new project is very easy. Staying at it and working it day in day out, week in week out is the hardest part. The part where you have to grind and do the work. Today we will talk about how to really get to the grind and do the work.
Your work tells tales. It speaks about you, your values, your hopes, your ambitions, and ultimately what you deem worthy of your energy and attention. It reveals, intentionally or not, what you really think about the world around you. Ultimately, your body of work—which is any place you create value, whether through your job, your relationships, or any other way you spend your time and energy—is a standing testament to your existence on this speck of rock orbiting the sun.
Henry David Thoreau writes that “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings.”
Hobbies or side projects are important here also. The good thing about a hobby/side projects, you can use your hobby/side project as a focus to make the best of your work life. You can spend the day doing your ‘job’ while the night and weekends are spent on doing what you love. And before you know it, your side project becomes your main job.
Here are 3 fresh habits to install to help you effectively manage your work:
Habit #1: The 90/90/1 Rule: For the next 90 days, devote at least 90 minutes of your work day to your selected project. Schedule it and make sure the time doesn’t change. If you miss one day, don’t beat yourself up, move to the next day. Your 90 mins could be early in the morning or last 90 minutes before you go to bed depending on what works best for you. But you have to take it serious. As serious as you take your regular job. This is your job as well. Just that you are doing it for yourself and not for your boss. Zero distractions. Just get that project done. Period.
Habit #2: The 30 Minute Inspiration Pocket: Schedule 30 minutes every day for the next week to get re-inspired. Please remember that you need to get your mindset right before you can achieve massive results in your outer world. All masters make the time to fuel their well of inspiration. Daily. Read a book for 20 mins (join our reading challenge for ideas on books to read), start writing in a journal. Keep an account of your progress, little things you did, learnt. Do this for 10 mins every day.
Habit #3: Pause and check for progress: In your regular job you have deliverables, reports, presentations you have to send to your boss and you have a performance appraisal. You should do this as well for your side project. Take stock at the end of the week. Schedule a reporting period at the end of the month to evaluate your plans and see if you are keeping to the plan. What do you need to change, improve or cut away completely? Main point: make sure you are checking your progress.
