“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” ~ Jim Rohn
We are a society driven by blame. We blame the government for running our lives, and our circumstances for ruining it. We blame the fast food industry for making us fat, the tobacco industry for giving us cancer. There is no wrong action, great or small, for which we cannot find someone else to blame. Often, the last person we lay blame on is ourselves. The thing is… we will only learn how to be better if we can accept responsibilities for the problems that we have.
I remember an incident when I was in the th 4th grade. I got in trouble at school because I threw a ball at someone (another boy much bigger than me) who stepped on my foot. When the teacher talked to me afterwards, I said, “Because he hurt me and made me mad.” The teacher’s response was, “ whether he hurt you or made you mad, you had the power to control your actions, emotions, and anger. You cannot control what other kids do, but you can control what you do. You must take responsibility for your action. Do not blame others.” I heard that advice that day but it took me several more years and incidents to finally learn that a big life lesson.
While we cannot control what happens to us all of the time, if we take responsibility for our own success and failure and learn from each opportunity and its outcome, we will grow much more as an individual. For example, if you were late to a meeting, instead of blaming on the traffic jam, accept full responsibilities and leave for your destinations much earlier next time. Using this method, I’ll guarantee that your chance for tardiness will decrease drastically.
It is up to each one of us to take responsibility for our lives. Even if the wrongs in our lives were someone else’s fault, we are the one that control our reaction to the situation. When unfortunate events occur in your life, you can choose to be angry and point fingers, or you can choose to do something about it. Be clear on what are the problems in your life, and take steps to correct the situation and change your life for the better.
We must realize that while we cannot control our environment, our economy, our government, or bosses, friends and partners, we have 100% control of ourselves. Whatever outcome, whether desirable or undesirable, we have the power to do something about it. We are the variable to our own success story, and we must focus on bettering ourselves to achieve our own success, abundance, joy and happiness. We are responsible for making this life journey the way we desire it, not our spouse, our partners, or our parents.
